DB Plaster were appointed by the Architectural firm Henry J Lyons to install insulation and render to this solid stone wall protected structure.

The challenge was to internally insulate the external walls, maintaining the breathability of the wall stucture from inside to outside and preserving the existing features, covings and cornices. While still improving the Energy performance and improving the buildings ability to cope with interstitisial condensation. Working closely with Martin Donnelly {Henry J lyons}, Niall Crossan {ecological Building systems} and MJ Clarke{main builder} we determined what type of insulation material would achieve our targets.

On the ground and first floors we installed the Calsitherm Climate Board system and proprietary lime plaster and mesh plaster system. The calsitherm was unique in the options it gave us. Even though we were adding over 35mm to the walls, Using the tapered board system we were able to preserve all covings while still achieving our insulation targets. Calsitherm also reduces the risk of any interstitial condensation with the ability to soak up any moisture coming from inside or outside, retaining it and gradually releasing it as the humidity levels of the room drop. Calsitherm and the thin coat render system are fully diffusion open therefore still retaining the solid stone walls ability to breathe.

On the second floor we installed the Gutex Thermoroom woodfibre insulation board and the Gutex breathable plaster system. Again this product retained the walls ability to Breathe.

On the roof ceilings we installed a Gutex Multitherm insulation board to existing rafters, Counterbatoned to create a service cavity, Thermo hemp insulation in the service cavity between the rafters, Pro Clima Intello vapour barrier to batons and plasterboard and skim finish
